Last week for my one of my politics classes, we were asked to compose a list of the 15 things NYC has taught us “outsiders” thus far. I soon realized my list was a bit more sarcastic than most, oh well, here it is:
1. The trick of nearly anything is to never get too comfortable with any feeling. Good or bad.
2.Dropping your “trust nobody and nothing” attitude is undeniably important, but very rarely.
3. Having an emotional breakdown on Madison Avenue looks better with a burrito in your hand.
4. Finding genuine people in this city is just about as promising as finding a reliable E train. So hold them tight and never let go.
5. Running from the police will only get you so far in a subway terminal.
6. When all else fails, the NY Times will be there for you in the morning.
7.Never, ever make a permanent decision on temporary feelings. That’s how the weakest links get cut.
8.Smiling big gets you so incredibly far.
9.There will never be an in-between with following your heart, gut, and head. So pick one.
10. Sprinting through the Upper East Side belting Pocahontas songs is the cure to any sadness.
11. You will never be able to count on any living specimen more than you can count on yourself. There is something so relieving about that.
12. Sleeping is a privilege. Maybe next year.
13. Living in a disgustingly populated city will make you feel more lonely than you have ever felt in your entire life. But everyone needs that feeling at least once.
14. NYC native boys are foul. Foreign boys are the best. And the people waiting for you back home are the greatest gems in your life.
15. Make your next move your best move, every single time.
